Sergei Babayan: Yes, it is only music—mostly practicing—especially before a recital. At such times, I turn my phone off because if I leave it on, I get distracted all the time and cannot focus. That’s why I am hard to reach.

Yulianna Avdeeva has received outstanding international recognition as the winner of the First Prize of the 16th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition (Warsaw, 2010). She is the fourth female to have won this title, after Halina Czerny-Stefańska, Bella Davidovich (equally placed in 1949) and Martha Argerich (1965).

Andrzej Szpilman, a composer, music producer, publisher, dentist and son of the famous pianist and composer Władysław Szpilman, will be our Guest of Honor. Assisted in the production of Roman Polański's film The Pianist (2002) and later cooperated on the public relations work with U.S., German, Swiss, Italian and Polish movie distributors.

Summer 2014 is the inaugural season of this series that aims to serve students, parents, teachers, and senior adults with quality performances, during the summer months when academic calendars and transportation issues will not be an obstacle to attendance.

In today’s music world, where a pianist hops on a plane to give a recital in Moscow one day, in New York the next day, then in London, he or she can live practically anywhere, as long as a big enough airport is close by. But in Bucharest? Why? Yes, it’s a capital city, but let’s face it, for most of us, it is quite unfamiliar. It is not considered Europe’s cultural heart, it is not a prime tourist destination, nor does it host political summits of great magnitude.
